A phrasing-first approach to improvisation, for players whose solos are technically right but musically flat. Part 2 of Oli Parker's Finding Your Voice series.
You did the work. You know the notes, you can play in time. But when you listen back, it sounds like an exercise — not music.
Think about how you speak. You emphasise some words, pause between others, speed up and slow down. Nobody talks in a flat, robotic stream — but that's exactly how most of us solo: same speed, same volume, every gap filled because silence feels like a mistake.
"You're essentially speaking through your instrument. We're not learning a new language with improv — we're just translating our own dialect onto the trumpet."
Oli Parker — Course Creator
Phrasing is the shaping of an idea over time. Oli breaks it into three things you can actually think about while you play.
One idea, shaped over time — grab their ears, take them somewhere, land it on purpose.
How you begin decides whether they listen. Not louder — more intentional. Craft an opening that sets up everything that follows.
Zoom out from phrase-by-phrase to the whole arc. Where it builds, where it breathes, where the climax lands. Silence becomes a tool, not a gap to fill.
Resolve home, descend to it, or let it dissolve — but never grind to a halt. The ending should feel like where the music was always heading.
Solos with direction: a clear arc from first note to last — a story, not a string of licks.
Confident starts and endings: openings that grab attention, endings that land instead of fizzling out.
Space that works for you: silence as your most powerful note — every phrase hits harder.
Your sound, finally: the same notes you already know, phrased so they sound like you.

Part 1 gets you improvising from nothing — rhythm, space, a handful of notes. Part 2 is about making it musical: phrasing, the shape of a whole solo, using silence, and how you start and finish.
No. Like Part 1, this is taught by ear and through playing. Phrasing is about feel and intention, not reading theory off a page.
Lifetime access. Oli recommends working through it slowly, over weeks — revisit lessons whenever your playing moves on.
Due to the digital nature of the course and immediate access to the material, all sales are final unless otherwise stated at checkout.
